Are you dreaming of owning your first home in Queensland? The First Home Owner Grant (FHOG) is a fantastic initiative designed to help you turn that dream into reality. With financial assistance of $15,000 or $30,000 towards buying or building a new home, this grant makes homeownership more accessible than ever!

How Much Can You Get?

The amount you can receive from the grant depends on when you signed your contract:

  • $30,000 for contracts signed between 20 November 2023 and 30 June 2025.
  • $15,000 for contracts signed before 20 November 2023.

If you are an owner-builder, the grant amounts are the same, depending on when the foundations of your home are laid.

Am I Eligible?

To qualify for the FHOG, you must meet specific criteria:

  1. Age: You need to be at least 18 years old.
  2. Citizenship: You must be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident. If you’re applying jointly, at least one applicant must meet this requirement.
  3. Previous Home Ownership: Neither you nor your spouse should have owned residential property in Australia since 1 July 2000.
  4. Residential Requirements: You must move into your new home within 1 year and live there continuously for 6 months.

Importantly, your income does not affect your eligibility for the grant.

What Homes Qualify?

The grant applies to new homes valued at less than $750,000. Eligible properties can include:

  • Houses, units, duplexes, or townhouses
  • Homes built on a relative’s land
  • Substantially renovated homes

You must ensure that the home has never been lived in or sold as a place of residence prior to your purchase.

How to Apply

Ready to apply for the First Home Owner Grant? You can submit your application through an approved agent, like a bank or lending institution, for a quicker process. Alternatively, you can apply directly to the Queensland Revenue Office online once you have all necessary documents ready.

Make sure to apply within the following timeframes:

  • Buying a Home: Within 1 year of taking possession.
  • Building a Home: Within 1 year of completion.

Keep in Mind

It’s essential to understand your obligations once the grant is paid. Ensure you meet the residence requirements and notify the Queensland Revenue Office if your circumstances change.
